Current state of Spyder forums

I wanted to start a badly needed discussion on the state of our cars and the forums.

There have been many  Spyder forums all over the world even a few in the US that were regional  but as time went along it became concentrated on one site.

Currently the two big sites are MR2ROC and Spyderchat.   The problem we face now is our home that we built with our contributions has been taken over and with the new forum software they violated  our agreements when they acquired the forum which was not to make the advertising intrusive.  History has shown us that these corporate entities that buy webforms do not care about community, well they do but as long as it keeps the revenue coming in.  Because they are out of touch they push the forum to the edge by trickery and deceit.  They are pretty much on automatic mode where someone else that doesn't visit the forum is calling the shots for short term gains.

Right now they will make the forum work well with quick response times but after awhile these forums slow down and offer a crapy experience with lip service but no real support.   Because it's the only alternative you will put up with it and it just keeps getting worse.

Sadly its very hard to start over because splinter forums are harder to succeed but as long as they keep turning the screws over there our community will grow. Once they introduce a paid premium membership it will be the death of that forum.

Im hopeful we can get this party started this time and once our small community grows it will be organic and a mass exodus will happen by world of mouth.

Just curious, will spyderchat ban me if I post "go to mr2-spyder.com to see info on something..."?

Or will they just block referrals to another site?

I make Amateur Armrests - see the Commercial Forum. I also have SMT repair seals available.

well i'm a mod over there and i won't be banning you... and jason hasn't been on much... i don't think they care much as they are still getting revenue from the viewership... worse they can do is block the link... but i'm not sure they have a dedicated resource looking to try and clean up all those threads to a smaller site like us...

I think Patrick could probably fill us in on what happened last time they contact him or maybe it was the guy who started Spyder Search.

From my recollection they didn't like the referrals as they were monitoring our PMs and they could threaten to shut down this site.

This company is so vicious that I read where splinter groups left they were able to influence providers to shut down these forums because they were affiliated with them.

Hopefully we will not have that issue and they will not have a strangle hold on us.

To fill this in a bit, when LT and I originally started this site/forum It was right when Spyderweb died. I was talking to many of you, and others over on SC through PM about coming to the new site on almost a daily basis. The PM's weren't spamming the system at all, and at most there was maybe two or three PM's sent out a day over the course of about a week. Towards the end of the week AGAdmin contacted me and said their Scanners, or something along those lines, had noticed an uptick in traffic with "Specific content" that content was the link to the new forum. Now, it could be that there was something in the spam filter that catches repeat information such as links, etc. We could have used something like that on the old forum on this site, but the thing that stood out is that he knew what the URL was which meant that they were able to see the messages, and the content being sent. He also knew exactly what messages had the URL in them which tells me in my case he(they?) openly went through the PM's I had sent.

So, yeah. They're watching. Then again, as long as you don't care about being banned and would rather see this forum through, and they don't ban your IP, or you know how to mask, or request a DHCP release/renew with your ISP, share the URL all you want.

At the time, they were open to "Working Together" to bring this forum online, and they even allowed me to post a thread with the URL of the forum, but no clue how things would be now.

Something we should hammer out now is to determine a way to sustain this place so it will never risk being bought out or what not. I rather not migrate every few years.

I don’t think we will have to worry about that. This forum was created to be free but most of all it belongs to all of us. The other forum started out this way but what happened was someone who was supposed to take care of it stole it and many years later after scamming the members for his own personal benefit sold it  to a corporate entity and screwed us all.

The only thing we need to do is make sure this forum survives and grows. It just needs a spark of activity and then it will take off on its own.

We need to put in the work and populate the forum.

I want to give you guys an interesting thing that just happened.

Im starting a light recruitment on Spyderchat.  I figured the best way to do so is to ask the person to give me their Email address because you have some information you would like to give them but don't feel safe sharing it in the PMs.  After the Email is given I would share the link over here.

I asked for three people Email address last night and this morning without asking CSPIDY (who I was planing to send an PM this evening) sent me a PM asking where the new website was.

The Admins locked the PM.   Its one thing to solicit and another for someone to ask where the website is and have the PM locked.  Its a freaking gulag over there.

My hunch is correct that they are monitoring my PMs for recruitment.

My suggestion is to ask who ever you want to recruit to request their Email and don't talk about the website or post a link to the website.

Im kind of shocked that I wasn't being hyperbolic.

Just joined and hopefully we can generate enough new forum interest that we can all learn from.

Take care and sorry to hear about the new tactics over there...

That's absolutely ridiculous! Especially considering your status and respect on that forum.

I have read up on how they do business from those that have sold their board and there was a thread on some forum where disgruntled VS ex employees  gave their experiences working for the company and how it made them sick to their stomach of the kind of things that was asked for them to do.

They are a nasty bunch of people and their parent company are Fabian Socialists.  The one weakness they have like most hardline socialist is being lazy.

Because they are probably monitoring me Im going to need help with recruitment.   When we had Spyderweb we were quiet successful and the forum grew exponentially but it required  an effort to build this place for us to be free again.

personally i prefer Internet Brands as a forum owner... i've been on acurazine since the early 2000's and also a mod there too... their leadership was always very hands off and even took our admin over as an employee so they couldn't just go back on any of their promises...

I have dealt with them before for some of the vendor fees and they were a little more  reasonable but still not great.

I did a good amount of recruiting for today.  Hopefully more members will join soon.

I'm sending text messages to the people who I have traded parts or had other dealings with outside the forums... sent them the link and asked them not to post on SC about it.
