As much as i am one of the offenders, we might all consider a profanity filter. But not "banmeplease", because that is too unoriginal. If it is not too much trouble, maybe a translation table, where the word is replaced with something innocuous. For example, "I just put big squishy tires on my car, and now it handles like dog[cabbage]".

It was pointed out to me that the board might be viewed by young people, perhaps a parent/child team, and foul language would be off-putting. Yes, we can self-police, but that requires reastraint, and i have demonstrated a clear lack in that area. Something to consider.

As to FS posts without prices, i didnt understand this at first. Then i realized that this could cause a bidding war. But, is that a bad thing? If it were silent, via PMs, then i could see that creating bad blood. But what if it were out in the open? I suggest nothing, just offering an opportunity for discussion. I dont understand the idea behind the rule.

Staying on topic is obvious, but it's still difficult for some (guilty again, sorry!).

All good points. I will point out the rationality of why. I have been to many forums and there are all kinds of rules for a reason and I will give you the rational of why we cant.

As to the profanity I have no problem with it and hope we can but its not my board to make that call  as others have families or it might get picked up at someones work in one of their filters making it hard for them to access the forum.  So if we were to regulate profanity I think the best way is to regulate ourselves and use the FCC as a guideline. I suppose some of it can slip but if there is a member where every other word is this and that maybe cursing needs to be turned down. I dont really have an opinion on this as I dont care, I like free speech.

As far as substituting words that would be bad because you are interfering with someones speech. I think the best way to handle it is to hold the post for moderation and then have that conversation so the OP can remove the language. If the language, pornography or whatever violates the rules  is not removed then further action will need to be taken while the post is not visible.

As far a the sales go with best offers and bidding its not a good idea because it  is the tactics that scammers use. Even if it isn't a scammers  tactic it can create all kinds of misunderstandings that will disrupt the board and bad blood between more than two parties.  This would be bad. A simple transaction between two people is a lot easier. There is a price and location and you just pay the man and the deal is done.  I feel that the board offers the sale as a convenience and not a feature of the board. Both parties are responsible for the transaction and the consequences of the transaction.

As far as profanity goes, if they said it on Law and Order...

PLEASE DO NOT do the "damn" thing! That urinated me off to NO END on Spyderweb! We wanted away from SC stool then but did stool like that...how about those alternate words!!!

I'll be back...

"Think as we think", say many Spyder owners, "or you are abominably wicked, you are a toad". After I'd thought about, I said "I will then, be a toad."

My personal preferance is to shy away from profanity as there is enough of that in my head already and I don't need to reinforce that.  But,  I'm a big boy and can handle a slip here and there.   I agree that the forum becomes less desirable to a broader spectrum of people when the use of cursing is excessive and/or beyond the FCC limits imposed on the producers of Law & Order.

Pornography should never be allowed on this site.   There are plenty of other sites for such indulgences.  I would hate to see us lose audience of young people coming into the car hobby because of pornography on this site and their parents right/responsibility to govern their child's exposure to images.  Plus, there are plenty of other people who are offended by pornography and would forgo the knowledge and expertise available here about MR2 Spyders if subjected to pornographic content.   I rarely access this site or SC from work,  but on the off-chance I did check threads here from a work computer and there was pornographic content,  I could be terminated from employment immediately as we have a no tolerance policy where I work.

  1. Does the "funny hat" rule still apply for those of us who have migrated here?

I agree the porn is an absolutely no and unlike profanity which is instead held for moderation if it’s over the top the picture should deleted immediately.  I think FCC rules apply here also.

As far as slips go I think we should let it slide if it’s extremely rare, not highly offensive  in  it’s context and not be nazis about it but if there is a pattern of it from the same member I think a warning is better before more extreme moderation.

Or should we be more vigilant.  I don’t have a clear opinion on this.

Trust me when I say I wasn’t happy with the way SW was run.  Lots of lessons were learned and should not be repeated,

Regarding the funny hat rule. My opinion on the matter is, it’s just a car, it’s a material thing. A person can have an ugly car and someone should be able to say I think your car is ugly.  It might upset the owner and it might be in poor taste however we shouldn’t  police strong opinions as that is not the American way and it’s dangerous. This is what makes us unique and different than the UK forum.

I think it’s self regulating because it reflects poorly on the persons personality and they can be challenged on their harsh opinions if need be. Once it gets personal then it’s something else and falls under rule number 1.

No censorship.

If something is in particularly bad taste, we can all say so, FFS.

The booze part is going in my part 3 of my five part mini series of Spyderchat history on the other thread.

Except for profanity and porno give me examples. We need to be objective otherwise one day someone is going to test our patience and burn this place down.

I'm offended no one commented on my using "urinated" and "stool"... 😠 😀 😀

If somebody starts a fire, we piss all over it and put it out.

Simple.

I wish it was that simple. What actually happens is the pyro in the room starts a small fire similar a  previous person which was unintentional and therefore tolerated and now the pyro uses that standard to show hypocrisy and favoritism.  What happens next is the guy who has the ugly car decides to grow a set of moral indignation realizes it’s time to start another fire and defend the pyro.

Before you know it you have someone else that felt he was ignored and he starts his own fire. Someone overreacts trying to put out all the fires but instead of water it’s fuel.  This justifies the hypocrisy even more and the ones on the sidelines don’t say anything, they just want to run from the fires.

This is one of the many things we got wrong on SW, it’s what happens on new forums when they reach 100 members and why they don’t survive.
